Retention

You’ve just spent quite a few months tirelessly keeping your braces clean, changing your Invisalign aligners, and visiting your Sudbury orthodontist and now you're showing off your new, beautiful smile. Because your teeth look perfect it may be tempting to ignore that last phase of your orthodontic treatment - retention. Don’t do it! Dr. D’Aloisio and his staff want to see you with that sparkling smile for the rest of your life, and that means giving your mouth time to set those teeth in place for life.

What Is The Retention Phase?

After your braces are off or your Invisalign aligners have run their course, Dr. D’Aloisio will fit you with a bonded retainer - one that is cemented to the inside of your teeth, and a removable retainer. For at least six months following your orthodontic treatment, you’ll wear the retainer all the time, removing it only for meals. These instruments will help maintain the corrected position of your teeth, which can move for a variety of reasons.

After the first six months, you will want to continue to wear your retainer at nighttime, for forever. New studies show that we grow in tiny increments throughout our life, which can affect the growth of your jaw and movement of your teeth. Teeth movement can also be affected by posture, habits, muscle pressure, the force of your lips and tongue, the eruption of new teeth, aging and so much more. That’s why it’s so important to become best friends with that retainer so that your smile can continue to shine in your Sudbury, Espanola, or Parry Sound community!

Guidelines For The Retention

Taking care of your retainer is super important. If it breaks or bends or feels uncomfortable, please don’t hesitate to contact your nearest Sudbury Orthodontics office. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind as you embark on your retainer phase of orthodontic treatment:

  • Each retainer is custom created for each patient and it is important to wear it at all times.
  • The retainer should only be removed for eating, brushing, and swimming.
  • Place the retainer in its case for safekeeping when it is not in your mouth. This should prevent it from getting lost, broken, or accidentally thrown away.
  • Cleaning the device is as simple as washing it with cold-warm water two times a day.
  • Remember, the retainer is a fragile appliance; keep it away from all types of extreme heat, including boiling water, hot car dashboards, and the washing machine.
  • It might feel awkward to talk with a retainer at first, but it just takes practice. Don’t give up; continue to sing, talk, and read aloud to get the hang of the new device.
