x-ray of teeth in black and whiteMaintaining Your New Smile through Retention

A vital element to orthodontic treatment is retention. You and your orthodontists, Dr. D’Aloisio have worked tirelessly to move your teeth into the ideal positions. Retention ensures the teeth remain in those positions for the rest of your life. Once your braces or Invisalign treatment is through, the professionals at Sudbury Orthodontics will help you understand the importance of using a retainer.

Retention Guidelines

Each retainer is custom created for each patient and it is important to wear it at all times. The retainer should only be removed for eating, brushing, and swimming. Place the retainer in its case for safekeeping when it is not in your mouth. This should prevent it from getting lost, broken, or accidentally thrown away. Cleaning the device is as simple as washing it with cold-warm water two times a day. Remember, the retainer is a fragile appliance; keep it away from all types of extreme heat, including boiling water, hot car dashboards, and the washing machine.

It might feel awkward to talk with a retainer at first, but it just takes practice. Don’t give up; continue to sing, talk, and read aloud to get the hang of the new device. If you feel it needs to be adjusted or if the retainer breaks in any way, come in to see us.
