Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry specializing in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.
Orthodontists spend an extra three (3) years in school after dental school to be able to call themselves orthodontists.
Without orthodontic treatment, malocclusion, or “bad bite”, can lead to tooth decay, bone loss, difficulty in chewing, and can contribute to speech impairment.
Most orthodontic problems are inherited. Some of these problems include:
Other problems are caused by accidents or trauma to the face or jaw. These problems include:
Most children should their first orthodontic evaluation between the ages of 7 and 10. The earlier the evaluation, the earlier potential problems can be diagnosed and treated. Delays in treatment can multiply some problems, making them much worse and more difficult to correct in the future.
After an evaluation by your orthodontist, treatment can begin anywhere from ages 8 to 12. This is the best time to begin treatment because the jaw is still growing, making it easier to correct some orthodontic problem that may be more difficult to correct as the child gets older.
The cost of treatment varies depending on the type of treatment, length of treatment and severity of the problem. Treatment options and costs will be discussed during your free consultation at our office, along with payment options and any potential discounts you may be eligible to receive.
Payment options include:
In general, active treatment times range from 18 to 24 months. Treatment can be longer or shorter depending on the type of treatment, severity of the problem and the patient’s cooperation.
Most people have some discomfort after the initial bonding procedure and after an adjustment, when the teeth may become tender for a few days after. We recommend any over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or Advil to relieve any discomfort.
For the first week or so after the initial bonding process, your lips and inner cheeks may become tender as they adjust to having braces against them. Do not worry, after the first week or two, your lips and cheeks will become stronger and more resilient to the braces, and you will soon forget that you are even wearing them! If any of the brackets do irritate your lips or cheeks, you can apply orthodontic wax to the bracket to provide a smooth coating for your lips and cheeks to rub against. If you run out of wax, stop by our office anytime for a free refill.
The main thing to remember is that the discomfort of braces is short-lived and the health benefits of your orthodontic treatment will last a lifetime!
