Be Sure to Wear a Mouthguard

Now that the new school year is underway, many of our Sudbury Orthodontics patients are getting excited about playing organized sports. We are proud of our student-athlete patients and love seeing them excel at their favorite sports! However, playing sports does pose a risk to teeth and braces. This is why we'd like to use this blog post to talk about the importance of wearing a protective mouthguard when playing sports.

Protect Your Smile –It's One of Your Greatest Assets

Playing sports poses an increased risk of injury to the mouth and head area. That risk is higher for athletes wearing braces as it only takes a fall, hard tackle or a ball to the face to damage or break your braces, teeth or your jaw. If something unfortunate like this were to occur, it could result in more orthodontic appointments for repairs. Even worse, you could sustain a painful injury that could result in you not being able to play your favorite sport for the entire season – and nobody wants that to happen!

The best way to protect your teeth, braces and jaws is to wear a mouth-guard when playing sports. A mouth-guard is designed to hold your teeth in place and absorb the energy from a fall or blow to the mouth in order to lower the risk of sustaining an injury.

Choosing a Mouthguard

While there are many over-the-counter mouth-guards available at sporting goods stores and online, these types of mouthguards often fall short in providing you with adequate protection. They tend to be bulky and fit loosely wherein they do not provide the type of protection needed to safeguard you from injury and damage to your braces. Plus, these mouthguards tend to make breathing and speaking difficult.

Contact Your Sudbury ON Orthodontist for a Custom Fit Mouthguard

For our athletic patients who are wearing braces, we offer custom fitted mouthguards. To make a custom fitted mouth-guard for you, we take impressions of your teeth and mouth. These impressions are then used as a model to create a professional-grade mouth-guard that fits you correctly. A custom fit mouth-guard will provide you with a high level of protection and less interference in breathing and speaking.

If you'd like to schedule an appointment to have a custom mouthguard made for you, please contact us today. We hope to see you soon! And we'd like to wish all of you playing sports this year the best of luck -- whether you're on the football, wrestling, hockey or basketball team or a member of the cheerleading squad!
